Medical Fraternities first became a part of student life at the University of Texas Medical Branch in 1898 when Alpha Mu Pi Omega established a chapter on the Galveston campus. The oldest active Medical Fraternity now on the UTMB campus is Phi Chi which was founded in 1903.
Long in need of repairs for their facilities, the fraternity retained Michael Gaertner & Associates in the fall of 1998 to prepare a Master Plan for renovating the facilities.
The Master Planning study consisted of a thorough assessment of the condition of the existing structures and an analysis of the Fraternities needs and resources. Trends in membership and in-house living were evaluated.
The Master Plan recommends major rehabilitation and renovation of the Main House, renovation of the east wing, demolition of the south wing and replacement of the North Wing. This will result in improved living conditions and communal facilities, retaining those structures in serviceable condition and replacing the badly deteriorated north wing. Outdoor recreational space is created on the south side of the site through the demolition of one wing of residential units.
A copy of the Master Plan with selected illustrations and a slide show summarizing the Master Plan can be viewed on line.
